YOUTH VIOLENCE COMMUNITY MEETING

YOUTH VIOLENCE COMMUNITY MEETING
May 1, 2006 @6:30p.m.
3939 Broadway--All Nations Church

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT COMMUNITY MEETING TO SAVE THE LIVES OF SACRAMENTO YOUTH

The last 3 weeks involved several multiple youth homicides throughout the city and/or county of Sacramento. Youth are dying in Sacramento and youth are being convicted to life sentences. Often in 2005 and in recent weeks in the 2006 year youth are considered the suspects for crimes of older and elderly adults. There is a youth violence crisis existing in Sacramento.

Famililies are faced with continuously burying their children. Siblings, friends, families, teachers, neighbors... are mourning. We request your attendance at the May 1, 2006 community meeting as we build a constructive dialog towards prevention of the violence, prevention of the deaths, prevention of the loss of freedom of Sacramento's youngest citizens.

Below is a list of some of the 2006 Youth Homicides ( information gathered from SacBee, law enforcement media releases, as well as Television Broadcasts)

*The name of the 16yr-old listed in grave condition, shot in the head on 1/13/06 is not listed above

2006 resulted in many non-fatal shootings of youth such as 19yr old Elizabeth Xiong who was shot @fast food resturant on Broadway on 2-9-06
11yr-old Arturo Islas who rode with his 17yr old neighbor to the store (both shot), Arturo is now blind

Two youth have been shot by law enforcement in 2006
Devin LePierro (24)
LaMarr Alexander (26)

Two 16yr old are being tried as adults for the homicide of 90yr old victim Marie Oliver
Youth are suspects in the homicide occurring of a 37yr old victim @ the 47th street light rail station
In 2006 a 14yr old boy is being charged with homicide, facing life without the possiblity of parole

Througout 2005 and entering the 2006 year the list of juveniles being tried as adults for life term sentences are increasing. (In fact they outweigh the number of youth deaths) A community is coming together to think "outside" the box, to reach out to the youth of Sacramento in the Spirit of Love to find comprehensive effective means of prevention- preventing their deaths, preventing their loss of freedom.

A community will meet undivided of social class, age, ethnicity to focus on the Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness for all of Sacramento's sons and daughters

Five Key Attributes of Successful Companies

The blueprint to building successful companies is simple, yet most companies have a hard time implementing the blueprint. Why do most companies fail? Because they don't have the right game plan, or if they do, they divert from the game plan. The game plan is very simple:

1. The most important ingredient to success is the team. Assemble the best team possible. The team includes executive management, non-management employees, the board of directors, vendors, suppliers, and service providers. Dysfunctional teams kill success. Highly functional teams ensure success. The team is the number one reason why investors invest in a company. Don''t be afraid to take corrective action regarding the team. Bad team members will quickly take down the team.

2. Focus. Focus. Focus. Keep things simple. Never lose sight of the big picture. Identify your core competencies. Establish your goals and objectives. Hold everyone accountable to meeting the goals and objectives. Every employee must know the goals and objectives. Each assigned task must be targeted to achieving the goals and objectives. It is the manager's job to ensure that every action being taken by the employee is in some way contributing to the stated goals and objectives. If an action doesn't contribute to achieving the goals and objectives, then immediately terminate or modify the action.

3. Be customer driven. Every person in your company must provide superior service to the customer in everything they do. Listen to the customer. Understand the customer's needs. Don't sell to the customer. Solve the customer's problems. Show the customer your value propoposition. Make sure that you quantify the benefits you provide the customer. And just do it. Again, and again. Go way beyond simply meeting the requirements. Make the customer extremely satisfied. And if the customer is unsatisfied, quickly take action to fix it.

4. Know what it takes to win. Make sure every employee embraces this attribute. Constantly ask your employees what it takes to win. Once an employee identifies what it takes to win, put the employee in a position to succeed. It is the manager's reponsibility to makes sure the employee has the resources to win.

5. Establish a corporate value system. Core values should include leadership, diversity, respect for the individual, customer service, and ethics.

Now you are armed and ready to make it happen.

The Power of Angel Investing

On May 23rd a very interesting educational seminar will be held in El Dorado Hills. Developed by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and Angel Capital Education Foundation, the Power of Angel investing has been getting rave reviews nationwide.

Content includes:

Finding angel opportunities that are right for you
Investment goals and portfolio strategies
Local deal sourcing
Due diligence
Structuring the deal/term sheets
Valuing startup companies
Monitoring angel investments
The post-investment relationships between angels and startup companies
What to do when things go wrong
Angels as advisors -- bringing more than money to investments

This event is limited to 35 participants, and will have many regional and experienced angel investors present to learn from. The lead instructor is Bill Payne, an active private investor and board member and advisor to entrepreneurial companies. He is an involved member of San Diego's Tech Coast Angels, Vegas Valley Angels, and Aztec Venture Network. Over three decades, Mr. Payne has successfully founded or invested in 24 startup companies. In his role with the Kauffman Foundation, he has worked on educational programs for entrepreneurs and their investors. This event will be held in connection with the GCN Angel and Venture Capital Investment Summit.
After the Seminar the Sacramento Angels are organizing a "Celebration of Success" Dinner at the Serrano Country Club for Seminar attendees, other accredited investors, and the Venture Capitalists attending the Golden Capital Network Summit conference. Founders of two recent companies that have "exited" for the SacAngels will be highlighted: Khimetrics which was recently sold to SAP, and DMGI which had an IPO earlier this year. There will also be a featured keynote speaker -- Alex Wilmerding, a partner at Boston Capital Ventures, who was Chairman of Khimetrics Board, has been invited.

Most importantly, the Dinner will be an informal networking event for people to meet active, leading angel investors in our region and learn about their experiences.

If you are an accredited investor, this is a terrific opportunity. If you have ever thought of contributing to entrepreneurism in Sacramento, this is a great educational, not to be missed event.

What is the New Internet and why is it important?

Over 200 countries are impacted by the Internet, and are looking to make the Internet work to help their people. Many interactions between the United Nations and ICANN, the organization that coordinates top-level domain names, have been made to discuss the future of the Internet and how it can be used to improve the quality of life for the world's population.

IPv6 stands for Internet Protocol Version 6. The current Internet, based on TCP/IP, has been in use in more or less its current form as IPv4 since January 1983. IPv4 uses a 32-bit address, enabling only 4 billion addresses. With increasing demand for IP addresses the supply of new existing addresses becomes smaller and smaller with each passing day. As time goes on cell phones and PDA devices are becoming increasingly sophisticated and Internet enabled, which will create even greater demand for IP addresses. What if we wanted to give every cell phone it's own IP address, so that you would be able to order movie tickets from Fandango, or book a flight to Barbados for the weekend while standing in line at the grocery store? Not enough addresses. What if you wanted to give each car an IP address so that your mechanic will automatically know when it is time for you to schedule an oil change, or if you wanted to learn the current traffic pattern between Dulles International Airport and Leesburg, VA while driving down Interstate 70? There are 56 million new vehicles made each year, and almost 800 million on the road today. Not enough IPv4 addresses for this either. The list continues with dozens of product categories; Boeing estimates that the average home in the US has over 250 different devices that could benefit from being connected to the Internet. Multiply this by 500 million households, and you can see there is a great demand for the current supply of remaining addresses.

The introduction of IPv6 can help remove this potential gridlock on the global information superhighway. IPv6 addresses are 128-bit addresses, enabling 3.8 x 10 to the 38th power, or trillions of trillions of trillions of IP addresses...enough for every grain of sand on earth. IPv6 has a very proven level of reliability and technical usability.

IPv6 has other advantages: restoring the end to end and peer to peer communications model for the Internet, more flexible packet headers, Jumbograms (so that a packet payload can be up to 4 GB vs. 64 KB – making downloading a MP3 of the new Enya song as quick and easy as screwing in a new light bulb), stateless address auto-configuration and node discovery optimizations to support mobility, and a mandatory requirement for IP layer security using IPsec. These benefits improve the quality and utility of the Internet, in addition to making the Internet potentially available to every person, place and thing as we evolve the Internet to support next generation networking and a mobile society.

King Palace - Best Chinese Food In Sacramento

The King Palace Seafood Restaurant has the best Chinese cuisine in the Sacramento area. That's according to me. The first time I ventured there with my friend Malcolm, I was taken back by the location. But I am adventurous and am willing to go places without regard to location. Our waitress that night, Paula, was very engaging and made our experience a positive one. Paula (who is the daughter of the owners), was very surprised to learn that I lived in Land Park. She remarked, "We don't get people from Land Park in our restaurant." Well Land Park residents, you are missing out on something very special.

First impressions of the restaurant break all first impression rules. The place is in a tired and run down shopping center at 5829 Stockton Boulevard. Entrance to the facility reveals a massive seating capability (perhaps the restaurant was a grocery store in earlier times). The decor is unappealling. But the food is awesome. Malcom and I liked it so much that we returned again three days later, as I was a bachelor for the week because my wife was out of town.

We vowed to bring my wife sometime in the future. Well, the future was last week. Malcolm, Gillian and I had the pleasure of dining at the King Palace over the weekend. We had a blast. Paula's sister Fiona waited on us. She was fantastic. We had a great time. The food was outstanding. The wait staff (it's a family affair - we met the third sister) coupled with the food make this place a keeper! And the price is right.

We will go again and again.

Cheating in Baseball Has Always Been Okay

I am not a big fan of Barry Bonds, but I feel compelled to support him. The press and the public are not treating Barry fairly. Barry is closing on Babe Ruth for second place in career home runs, hitting his 709th round-tripper yesterday.

Baseball is a game. It always has been a game and always will be a game. Nothing more. Nothing less. The institution of baseball has had a long history of cheaters and always supported these cheaters. Very little has been done about cheating in baseball. It's a part of the game. We've accepted cheating in baseball until now. What's changed?

Sammy Sosa, Wilton Guerrero, Chris Sabo, Albert Belle, Bill Hatcher and Graig Nettles were caught cheating with corked bats. George Brett was caught cheating for illegally applying pine tar to his bats. Gaylord Perry was the king of spitballers, once allowed, until 1920.

And there was Shoeless Joe Jackson, caught in the 1919 Black Sox legend of throwing the World Series. Heck, Jackson's efforts have been immortalized in several movies. Now most of you probably don't know that Barry's dad, Bobby Bonds was caught cheating with a flattened bat. I guess it runs in the family.

Pete Rose though is paying dearly for his gaffe with a lifetime ban from baseball for allegedly gambling on baseball. Admittedly, gambling in of itself is not cheating. Afterall, Rose's gambling probably did not contribute to him setting the major league record of 4,256 hits.

Barry, I am glad you did not gamble. Look, the history of baseball shows us that cheating during a game is okay and gambling on baseball is not okay. Keep hitting away. If baseball treats you differently for cheating than past acts of cheating, then you will have been treated unfairly. And if that occurs, I will ban myself from baseball forever.

Kings Make the Playoffs

Just a few short months ago, who would have imagined that the Kings would make the playoffs? Even more interesting, after the hullabaloo regarding the Ron Artest trade (the King of Bad Boys, so the press said), who would imagine the team wouldn't have completely disintegrated, let alone made the playoffs. But there they were tonight, stepping up to beat the New Orleans/Kansas City Hornets, and grab the 8th and last spot. Go Kings...
Of course, now you have to face either the Spurs or the Suns, both great teams. You never make it easy for yourselves, or the Sacramento fans.

Rhonda Erwin - A Sacramento Hero

A few months ago I found myself on the email list of Rhonda Erwin. She wrote compellingly every few days about the number of youth that were being killed in Sacramento. She wrote that there needed to be an answer besides tracking down the killers and putting them in jail. She wrote that the city needed to step up and recognize the number of young lives that were being lost and come up with an overall plan. And she wrote and wrote and wrote.

Just the other day she wrote this:

Tyrone Rhinehart is the cousin of Lamar Alexander. Many of you may recall me mentioning Tyrone in an email nearly a year ago. Tyrone was the cousin of David Perkins murdered in 2005 and Damon Perkins murdered in 2003. At the vigil Tyrone stood off into the distance, tears filled his eyes. He told me that he has a photo of his peewee football league. He begin to name the names of the starting line up. "They are all gone", he added. "They are dead, (murdered) and the few left from the team are in jail." Tyrone is a young minister. He choked back tears as he spoke of each person one by one and how they died. Tyrone is a young man who cannot get over grieving for one friend or cousin before another one has been murdered.

Ms. Erwin has the attention now of various governmental agencies who have promised to come together to work on a solution. She (and her cause) have been recently featured in several local newspapers. She truly embodies a quote by Marion Wright Edelman I use at the end of each email I send:

“If you don’t like the way the world is, you change it. You have an obligation to change it. You just do it one step at a time.”

Rhonda Erwin, I salute you for your dedication to eradicating the senseless death of our youth.

Dysfunctional Teams

A dysfunctional team is a common reason why a company fails to perform well. Some time ago, I resigned from a privately held company here in Sacramento. Prior to my departure one of the two owners asked me why I was leaving. I said the primary reason was a difference in core values between the company and myself. The owner wanted me to be more specific. I said his company had a very dysfunctional team. He pushed me for more details. And I responded with the following thoughts.

According to Patrick Lencioni, author of "The Five Dysfunctions Of A Team":

Not finance. Not strategy. Not technology. It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare.
In his book, Lencioni artfully details the five dysfunctions and their associated characteristics of a team as:
  • absence of trust (invulnerability);
  • fear of conflict (artificial harmony);
  • lack of commitment (ambiguity);
  • avoidance of accountability (low standards);
  • inattention to results (status and ego).

Do you see any of these traits or behaviors with your team? Do you want to build a better functioning team? I suggest you read Lencioni's book. It is a two hour read and provides great insight on team building.

Back to my former employer. I do regret one thing. Rather than attempting to fix the dysfunctional team, I simply quit. I felt the relationship had killed too many of my brain cells. Perhaps I should have stepped up to the challenge and attempted to build a better team. My mistake. I guess that's how we grow and learn. I am better for the experience and am happily employed today.

Heavy Hitters in Real Estate - Diversity Free

I just finished reading my latest Sacramento Business Journal. It has a supplement this week entitled Heavy Hitters in Real Estate. I flipped through the 22 pages looking at the winners in several categories - Apartments, Industrial, Investments, Land, Office, Retail, Rookie of the Year. And suddenly it struck me, of the 80 or so winners, only one was a woman. And not one Black, and very few, if any, Hispanics. Real estate in this town is a white man's business.

Nelle Thompson, CB Richard Ellis, number 9 in the industrial category - I don't know how you did it, but you are my hero.

The sad thing is that things don't look like they are changing any time soon...not a minority to be seen in the rookie of the year category either.

Reminder - Message from Local 2 and my son

My son called me today. He was at a union meeting in Honolulu. There was a lot of loud speechifying in the background. He is the union rep for the hotel he works at in Maui. I think he got the job because was the only person with an undergraduate degree. His master's degree was probably superfluous. Although his compassion would make him be my choice to be the bridge between labor and management. He wanted me to use the power of the blog to remind everyone of something important. (I think he has vastly overestimated the power of this blog, but it is nice that a son overestimates anything positive a mother does). Being completely incapable of denying my son anything (my daughter too!), here is the message.
