California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHRSA) Expect Millions
A recent study conducted by Cambridge Systematics, sponsored by the Metropolitan Transportation Comission, predicts that ridership on the proposed 700 mile high-speed electric train between Sacramento and San Diego (with stops in San Francisco and Los Angeles along the way) would reach 2.5M daily trips This would translate into more than 100 million in 2030. This is a much higher number than had been previously predicted. Revenues from such a ridership level would be approximately $3 billion annually. You can stay abreast with the news and see a video of your conceptualized ride.
Good news for the environment, our congested highways, and our frazzled nerves.

Gil,
As much as I would love to see HSR in California, it won't ever reach Sacramento or San Diego. Here's what will happen:
1) Voters approve HSR assuming that, as promised by backers, all for major California metropolitan centers will be connected.
2) LA-SF is built first.
3) Project runs 30% over budget.
4) Project backers determine that extending lines as promised to Sacramento and SD too expensive.
5) HSR officials determine that Sac. and SD can be adequately served by using "upgraded" Capital Corridor and Amtrak LA-SD lines.
6) Citizens of Sac. and SD realize they've been screwed by HSR proponents in SF and LA.
7) Once again citizens of Sac. and SD pay for upgrading infrastructure of LA and SF.
We will never see HSR in Sacramento or San Diego.
No thanks Gil...
