The Advice of Tim Ferriss - "Value Attention Over Time"

This is good stuff ... I must take heed and follow the advice of Tim Ferriss:

Time without attention is worthless, so value attention over time.

Here are a few questions that can help you put on the productivity blinders and put things in perspective. Even when you’re not traveling the world, develop the habit of letting small bad things happen. If you don’t, you’ll never find time for the life-changing big things, whether important tasks or true peak experiences. If you do force the time but puncture it with distractions, you won’t have the attention to appreciate it.

  • What is the one goal, if completed, that could change everything?
  • What is the most urgent thing right now that you feel you “must” or “should” do?
  • Can you let the urgent “fail” — even for a day — to get to the next milestone with your potential lifechanging tasks?
  • What’s been on your “to-do” list the longest? Start it first thing in the morning and don’t allow interruptions or lunch until you finish.

Will “bad” things happen? Small problems will crop up, yes. A few people will complain and quickly get over it. BUT, the bigger picture items you complete will let you see these for what they are–minutiae and repairable hiccups.

Make this trade a habit. Let the small bad things happen and make the big good things happen

Graybeards Strike Gold On Google

jerry%20the%20handyman.jpg
Unbelievable gold mind find! The graybeards have found the mother lode with Google. And they are doing it the Tim Ferriss way - the 4-Hour Workweek.

Jefferson Graham, writer for the USA Today reports:

Handyman Jerry Alonzy, age 57, makes $120,000 a year from Google ads on his Natural Handyman website. How much effort does Jerry put into it?

"I put two, maybe three hours a day on the site, and the checks pour in," he says.

Jerry, you're killing me! You've managed to hit my personal goal of $10,000 per month income from my websites.

Jerry proudly notes, "All I need is a laptop and a high-speed Internet connection, and I can live anywhere."

Handyman Jerry, you are the quintessential image that Tim Ferriss has created - "Escape 9-5, live anywhere & join the rich."

If Handyman Jerry can do it, so can I!

And there are other graybeards:

  • 75-year old retiree Jerrold Foutz earns $25,000 a year with Google ads on his switching mode power supplies website www.smpstech.com;
  • empty-nester Hope Prior earns $90,000 from her recipe website www.cooksrecipes.com;
  • 74-year old bee enthusiast, Al Needham, earns $250 a month with www.bees-online.com; and,
  • camera buff Gail Bjork, a 63-year old Tampa resident, earns $1,500 a month with www.digicamhelp.com.

Thanks Tim for enlightening me on the the 4-Hour Workweek. And thanks to Jefferson Graham for reinforcing to his readers that it can be done.

Tim Ferriss - The Grinch That Stole Christmas

Yes folks, the Putz media player, a DuroSport Electronics Corporation product, will not be in Christmas stockings this year and it's because of Tim Ferriss.

This is a humorous testimonial.

Guide For Online Publishers - How to Create Fans

Google Alerts is fast becoming my favorite tool. Two of the Alerts are proving to be reliable - Tim Ferriss and 4-Hour Workweek. Today, I discovered CopyBlogger.com from my Tim Ferriss Google Alert. Brian Clark offers this sage advice for online publishers:

It’s no secret at this point that I believe the best way for online publishers to create fans is to teach. For whatever reason, I naturally gravitated to an educational approach to selling and to paid content right from the start, and I’ve never looked back.

Whatever your approach, keep this in mind: modern marketing is less about market share, and more about share of customer. It’s much easier to keep an existing customer then it is to attract a new one, so do everything you can to retain the relationships you’ve got. Even though the allure of the Internet leads us to believe we can conceivably reach every possible person who might be interested in what we offer, you’ll make more money by focusing on attracting the right people and keeping them as happy as possible.

Brian's blog is a keeper - I've added it to my RSS feed.

Outsourcing Your Life

An interesting article earlier this year about Outsourcing Your Life in the Wall Street Journal.

Here's one of the quotes:

Actress Michele Greene, known for her role as Abby on "L.A. Law," has found a way to outsource one of Hollywood's most entrenched jobs: the personal assistant. She contracted India-based concierge service GetFriday last year. Ms. Greene says she pays $150 a month for about 20 hours of service. That's about $2 less per hour than her L.A. assistants charged.

Ms. Greene says her offshore assistant has been a big help while she works on her second young-adult novel and a country-folk CD in addition to acting projects. Along with paying her bills and booking her flights, her assistant has given her tips on Bollywood movies and Indian food. His recipe for garbanzo beans with eggplant and peppers has become one of her signature dishes. It's a huge improvement over the unemployed actors who typically fill these jobs in Hollywood, she says: "They'd screw up everything you'd ask them to do."

Checking out the testimonials on the site, I came across this one:

“I hired Your Man in India for a bold experiment. The experiment was quite successful.”

- A.J. Jacobs,
Editor-at-large,Esquire Magazine.

The mind boggles.

The Newly Rich, 4HWW, Family Style

I subscribe to Google Alerts and came across Jed and Chelsey's website, The Newly Rich, 4HWW, Family Style.

Check out their journey towards a 4-Hour WorkWeek. I particulary like Jed's latest blog - Work for Hire: In defense of an hourly wage, a practical approach for getting started on the 4-Hour WorkWeek. Jeb quit his corporate salaried job, works only 20 hours a week as a consultant, and earns more now in 20 hours than he did in his salaried position.

Smart move!

Do most corporate workers hate their jobs?

Fox News recently interviewed Tim Ferris, author of the 4-Hour Work Week, by asking him 7 questions. Below is one of them that I found interesting:

Do most corporate workers hate their jobs?
Tim answered:
No. Most corporate workers are bored and dangerously comfortable. They are in that gray area between love and hate that leaves most with constant low-grade anxiety and an acute sense of wasted potential. This is more common and more damaging than hate, because hate spurs action. Tolerable mediocrity leads you to wake up one day and ask "what happened to the last 20 years?" That's no way to spend the prime of life. ..... Boredom should scare people as much as hate.
Are you bored and dangerously comfortable? Are you ready to do something about it?
