Obama Changes Rule Without Fanfare
President Barack Obama issued an order restoring U.S. funding for international family-planning groups involved with abortion. But he chose not to do so on Thursday, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.President Obama was breaking with the tradition set by his recent predecessors to make an abortion-related order on the anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling, another example of his attempt to support liberal policies he believes in while trying to defuse emotional political debates.
Feminists are screaming, anti-choice supporters are joining them. Seems like Obama has set the right tone. Restore the rights of women around the world but don't rub it in. In fact, make (as he did) a statement about wanting to reduce the number of abortions. When both sides are not happy, he's making progress.
Both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush used the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade to score points by removing and reinstituting this very rule. Hats off to Obama for doing it his way, once again.
