Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Film begins at 7:00 p.m.
Crest Theatre

Iron Jawed Angels recounts a key chapter in U.S. history: the struggle of suffragists
who fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment. The film shows how defiant activists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns broke from the mainstream women’s rights movement, daring to push the boundaries of political protest to secure women’s voting rights in 1920. Iron Jawed Angels is an HBO film starring Hillary Swank, Frances O’Connor, Angelica Houston and Patrick Dempsey.

You should definitely go to this. You will be amazed and forever grateful to your female ancestors for what they did to get us the vote. And you will always, always, always vote every chance you get when you see how much getting us the vote cost them.

My Grandson Thinks I'm Rachael Ray

I am spending time with my grandchildren. I am cooking, something my husband doesn't encourage me to do very often. Over time, he has taken over most of the cooking duties because he enjoys it and frankly it shows!

But to my grandchildren, I am quite the champ at cooking. The other night, my 7-year old grandson walks through the door and tells me how good my cooking smells. Later I find out he has asked his mother on the way home what I am making. She tells him the menu and he responds that no matter what it is, it will be good, "because Granny is making it".

Wow, I have Rachael Ray status to the 7, 6 and 4 year-old.

And when they figure out that cooking is not my passion, it will be fine because I have lots of other useful skills. Just today I figured out how to download the new version of Google Earth, which includes Google Sky and the 3-D building options.

Wow, this morning, I have Bill Gates status to the 7 year-old.

And I have plenty more tricks up my sleeve as they grow. Gin rummy anyone?

The Annual Cookie Baking Disaster Ensues

There is something about baking cookies for Christmas that is mandatory for me. I can't imagine having my family show up and pulling out cookies that I bought from a bakery. Of course, my family, if given half the chance might actually prefer that option, but the choice is never given! In my mind, baking cookies for your family shows how much you love them. Crazy, huh?

As the time approaches, I get out the recipes, build a spreadsheet to ensure I have a master shopping list for all of the ingredients and then lock myself away in seclusion for the massive cookie baking. Sounds good. But then things deteriorate at a rapid pace.

This year, I pulled out the first batch of cookies and wondered why they had no resemblance to the picture in the recipe. It didn't take me long to figure out that I had forgotten to add the chocolate chip cookies. A friend called during this discovery. When I told her I was baking cookies, she told me what a great stress reliever that was. When I told her of my missing chocolate chips, she commented, "Oh, aren't they a pretty essential ingredient?" YES...and that's why I definitely don't find baking cookies relaxing!

I shook off my first disaster and moved to the next creation. In mid-mixing, I couldn't find the sweetened condensed milk. I knew absolutely that I bought it. It was on my master list. I saw it in the shopping cart. But after searching high and low, I couldn't find it. OK, great. I have the bottom part of the bar cookie baked and now I can't complete it due to the lack of one ingredient.

Admitting defeat, I folded my tent and went shopping. I am good at shopping. Later in the day, filled with renewed confidence, I returned to my baking pursuits. I baked a double batch of sweet potato zucchini bread. I finished off the recipe with the new can of sweetened condensed milk I have bought. And I went to bed feeling like I might be getting into the swing of things until I woke in the middle of the night to realize I left the nuts out of the bread!

One thing I am good at doing during the annual cookie baking disaster is burning myself on the cookie tins and the oven racks, And sure enough, I have 3 good burns to show for a bad day of baking.

I think I will poll the family on Christmas day. Maybe they will resolve me from my annual cookie baking disaster. And that would leave more time for shopping.

Dan Fogelberg Dead At 56

Dan Fogelberg died over the weekend from prostate cancer. He was only 56. I was shocked to hear the news. He was such a big part of my 20's and 30's. A bigger part that I realized based on the CD that my daughter gave me a couple of Christmases ago - Twin Sons of Different Mothers - Dan Fogelberg and Tim Weisberg. She remembered it blaring through the house in 1978, when she was just 8 years old. And still remembered it enough to buy it for me 25 or more years later.

I saw him many times in concert at Wolf Trap, the wonderful outdoor ampitheater outside of Washington, DC. He seemed like a really decent guy. How sad that he was diagnosed in his early 50's with advanced prostate cancer. Make sure all the men in your life get tested.

Here's to you, Dan Fogelberg.

Ella's Restaurant Review

A note from Brenda Diesel about her visit to Ella, Randall Selland's new downtown Sacramento restaurant, located at 1131 K Street:

Bill and I had lunch yesterday at Ella restaurant. At the SacWomen event, I heard so many people talking positively about it. And, we agree. It definitely exceeded my expectations.

You would like the concept--small plates meant to be shared. We had absolutely fabulous raw oysters, prawns in citrus juice, crispy pork belly, beet salad, and lemon tartlet. Every dish was amazing, and business was booming even though the legislature is not in session.

The decor is interesting and completely different for Sacramento. Most people absolutely love it; I don't love it (nor do I hate it), but I give them kudos for stepping outside the box. It definitely has a bit of a Scandinavian feel (the designers are from Norway, I think, or maybe Sweden).

Friends of ours from Hawaii and formerly of Sacramento are coming to town next week, so we are having dinner there. I suspect the menu may be the same, but in any case am looking forward to it. If you like, I can give you a second experience after dinner next week. That's always my litmus test. Is it as good the second time?

Brenda and Bill love to visit good restaurants here and in Napa and Sonoma. Their recommendation means a lot. I can't wait to visit Ella.

And one more reason to attend SacWomen events - great restaurant recommendations!

Women Driving Motocycle Sales

woman%20motorcycle.jpg As a child, Genevieve Schmitt would cover her ears when a giant motorcycle with loud pipes blasted past. Today that big-twin thunder is music to her ears, and she's the one making the noise.

After decades of riding on the backs of bikes often driven by men, women in growing numbers are sliding to the front of the saddle and driving themselves, a movement Schmitt fosters as president of Women Riders Now, based in Livingston, Mont.

Women account for at least 10 percent of motorcyclists in the U.S. today, and they're the fastest-growing segment in the graying $9.7 billion motorcycle industry.

Although the motorcycle industry is still fairly strong — manufacturers sold 1.1 million bikes in 2005, the most recent year for which figures are available — growth has slowed from the boom between 1995 and 2000, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council.

In addition, the average age of motorcyclists continues to increase, from 32 in 1990 to 41 today, said Jessica Prokup, a spokeswoman for the industry council.

About 15 percent of Kawasaki's motorcycle sales are to women, the largest percentage in the industry, said Sean Alexander, a company spokesman. Harley-Davidson is second, with 12 percent.

"Baby boomers are reaching an age where they are moving away from motorcycle purchases," Alexander said. "Someone has to replace them over the next 15 years."

Women are getting plenty of encouragement from manufacturers. They accounted for about $970 million in motorcycle sales in 2005.

Harley-Davidson, for example, has established a Web site for women, sells clothing and gear for women, and sponsors "garage parties" at Harley-Davidson dealers to introduce women to motorcycling.

Once the noisy macho ride of biker toughs and still the industry's most popular cruiser, Harley-Davidsons are relatively low to the ground and can be handled by shorter people of both sexes.

Check out all the details

This would be a terrific event to take your daughter to (and even the special men in your life). The fight for women's equality has been a long and arduous struggle and still continues and deserves a big spotlight in our history. Celebrating the brave women who have pushed it forward deserves our wholehearted support. And take it a step further by purchasing a wonderful DVD - Iron Jawed Angels.

Women's Triathlon - Rancho Seco - July 26th

Join us at the 3rd Annual Luna Bar Women's Triathlon taking place this Sunday at Rancho Seco. Many women will be competing and a large percentage will be taking place in their first triathlon event.

There will be a half-mile swim in Rancho Seco Lake, followed by an out and back 16 mile road bike course and finish with a fun three mile run.

And if you want to get your kids in on the act, there will be a Clif ZBar Tri-For-Kids Triathlon on Saturday at the same site which is open to all kids 7 – 14 years old.

Please remember, all races are about forward movement, not winning. That is what I continue to tell my triathlon teammates. Yes, I will be competing on Sunday in my first athletic event since I came second in a swim race when I was 13. Wish our team luck!
